Let's Understand The Common Types Of Prosthetics

Upper Limb and Lower Limb Prosthetics have been widely used for many years. These prosthetics aid in the replacement of lost limbs. They have advanced and become more complex with time and technology. Let's understand in detail with the help of this blog.

Selecting Parameters for the Prosthetics

An artificial limb used to replace a specific body part is known as a prosthetic. The following factors determine the type of prosthetic:

The removed body component.

Where that body portion is located

Surgery's scope

The state of the body component that is still present.

Prosthetics and its types

The kinds of prosthetics vary according to the bodily component they are intended to replace. In reality, only two bodily parts - the arm and leg determine the sort of prosthesis. These sorts aid in the replacement of full or partial arm and leg amputation.

Transradial Prosthetic

This kind of prosthetic is worn on the arm under the elbow. A forearm and wrist are features of a trans-radial artificial limb. Cables and wires are recent improvements in this sort of prosthetic.

This kind of prosthetic provides an arm that resembles a robot. With this cutting-edge prosthetic, the patient can operate their arms like actual hands.

Transhumeral Prosthetic

Transhumeral Prosthetic is one of the hardest prosthetics to install. The bodily part's complicated location contributes to the challenge. Typically, a suction system is used with this kind of prosthetic. With the aid of the bounce linear system, the prosthetic can also be attached to the residual limb in another way.

Transtibial Prosthetic

This kind of prosthetic is used on the leg beneath the knee . It aids in the restoration of the limb's regular functions. It's because the majority of the leg is in good shape. As a result, it aids in restoring full mobility. Patients who use this kind of prostheses can even participate in sports.

When creating this, always bear in mind the pressure and delicate parts. The patient's comfort is crucial because the prosthetic supports the whole weight of the body. The large portion of these prosthetics employ a socket or pin system.

Transfemoral Artificial Limb

This kind of prosthetic is used above the knee. This prosthetic requires more time to recover for amputees. This is due to the prosthetic limb being longer than the residual limb. In this kind of prosthesis, new developments include hydraulic pumps. These modern medical advancements facilitate quick recovery for patients.

Flat Feet Overpronation : Causes and Solutions

 Overpronation

• Overpronation is an abnormal gait that can happen when the foot rolls too far inward- making it more difficult for your arch to absorb impact. This condition is especially common in people with flatfeet.

Causes

Overpronation is very prominent in people who have flexible, flat feet. The framework of the foot begins to collapse, causing the foot to flatten and adding stress to other parts of the foot. As a result, over-pronation, often leads to Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, Metatarsalgia or Bunions.Overpronation usually causes overuse injuries, especially in runners especially in runners.

There are many causes of flat feet. Obesity, pregnancy or repetitive pounding on a hard surface can weaken the arch leading to overpronation. Often people with flat feet do not experience discomfort immediately, and some never suffer from any discomfort at all. However, when symptoms develop and become painful, walking becomes awkward and causes increased strain on the feet and calves.

Solutions

Overpronation can be treated conservatively with custom made foot orthotics. These orthotics should be designed with appropriate arch support as per the requirement and medial rear foot posting to prevent the over-pronation. Doing exercises that strengthen the arches and muscles around them.

Metatarsalgia- What is it and how to relieve it?

Metatarsalgia is the name for pain in the ball of the foot. It affects the metatarsals, the bones connecting the ankle bones to the toes.

This is a common foot disorder that can affect the bones and joints at the ball-of-the-foot. Metatarsalgia (ball-of-foot-pain) is often located under the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th metatarsal heads, or more isolated at the first metatarsal head (near the big toe).

                                               Causes

Metatarsalgia can have a number of different causes, including wearing unsupportive footwear, conditions such as arthritis, and doing high-impact sports. Most frequently by women’s narrow shoes and other restrictive footwear. Footwear with a narrow toe box forces the ball-of-foot area to be forced into a minimal amount of space. This can inhibit the walking process and lead to extreme discomfort in the forefoot.

Solutions

The first step in treating metatarsalgia is to determine the cause of the pain. If improper fitting footwear is the cause of the pain, the footwear must be changed. Footwear designed with a high, wide toe box and a rocker sole is ideal for treating metatarsalgia. The high, wide toe box allows the foot to spread out while the rocker sole reduces stress on the ball-of-the-foot.

A custom made foot orthtics withmedial arch support &metatarsal dome placed behind the ball-of-the-foot is the usual form of treatment. This will relieve pressure and redistribute weight from the painful area to more tolerant areas.

Do Your know About Morton’s Neuroma ?

Morton’s Neuroma is a common foot problem associated with pain, swelling and/or an inflammation of a nerve, usually at the ball-of-the-foot between the 3rd and 4th toes.

Symptoms of this condition include sharp pain, burning, and even a lack of feeling in the affected area. Morton’s Neuroma may also cause numbness, tingling, or cramping in the forefoot.

Causes
Morton’s Neuroma is a foot condition caused from an abnormal function of the foot that leads to bones squeezing a nerve usually between the 3rd and 4th metatarsal heads. Symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma often occur during or after you have been placing significant pressure on the forefoot area, while walking, standing or jumping. This condition can also be caused by footwear selection. Footwear with pointed toes and/or high heels can often lead to a neuroma. Constricting shoes can pinch the nerve between the toes, causing discomfort and severe pain.

Solutions
the first step in treating Morton’s Neuroma is to select proper footwear with custom made insole (the insole which is designed for your foot only). Footwear with a high and wide toe box is ideal for treating and relieving the pain. The next step in treatment is to use custom made insole with a metatarsal dome. This is placed behind the ball-of-the-foot to unload pressure, and relieves the pain caused by the neuroma.
